What should be included in a Daily Pre-Use Company Vehicle Safety Checklist?

A pre-use company vehicle check helps ensure the vehicle is roadworthy, safe, and compliant with company policies and legal obligations (e.g. under PUWER and the Health and Safety at Work Act).
The driver should complete it at the start of each shift. Here’s what should be included:
1. Exterior Checks
Tyres
Tread depth (minimum 1.6mm)
Pressure (check against manufacturer’s spec)

Lights & Indicators
Headlights, brake lights, reversing lights, fog lights, indicators — all working
Mirrors & Windows
Clean, not cracked or damaged
Wipers are functioning, and the blades are in good condition

No visible fluid leaks underneath the vehicle
2. Under the Bonnet (Fluids)
Oil level – top up if needed
Coolant – between min and max
Brake fluid – at the correct level
Windscreen washer fluid – topped up
3. In the Cabin
Brakes
The foot brake and handbrake feel firm and responsive
Steering
Moves freely, no unusual noises
Horn – working correctly
The reversing beep is working if fitted
Seatbelts
Present, not frayed or damaged, fully functional
Dashboard warning lights
All off (except engine running lights)
Wipers and Washers
Spray correctly, and the blades clear the windscreen effectively
4. Equipment & Documentation
Does the driver have the proper license for the vehicle?
Vehicle insurance and MOT (if applicable) valid
Road tax up to date
Breakdown kit: warning triangle, hi-vis vest, torch, etc.
Spare wheel or tyre repair kit present and serviceable
First aid kit (full and in-date)
Fire extinguisher (in-date and not tampered with)
Driver’s mobile phone charged and hands-free compliant
5. Load & Security (if applicable)
Loads are:
Securely stowed
Not obstructing visibility
Within weight limits
Tail lifts/ramps/doors operate correctly and safely
6. Cleanliness
Windscreen, windows, lights, and number plates clean
Interior free from clutter that could obstruct controls
Documentation
Complete and sign a daily Vehicle Check Form
Report defects immediately to the fleet manager/supervisor
Do not drive if the defect compromises safety
