On average, 5 young people take their life every day.
Every one of them is someone's child, someone's friend. Behind every number is a life that mattered.
But suicide is preventable. With support at the right moment, young lives can be saved.
Until today, that is what Papyrus, the Youth Suicide prevention charity helped with.
For almost thirty years, Papyrus was the place young people could go to, day or night, for support.
This week is National Suicide Prevention Week, and it has come as a shock to many to hear that today Papyrus has gone into administration. Their excellent work has come to an abrupt halt.
Anyone who was experiencing thoughts of suicide, as well as parents, families and carers of vulnerable young people experiencing mental or emotional distress, teachers, pastoral staff, and anyone who comes into contact with a young person could use their service.
To all the volunteers who have worked for the charity, thank you for all your help. Please, your valuable skills are important. Reach out to other similar charities, they need your support.
A sad day, and a tragic loss to an essential service.
For the young people struggling, all is not lost. You can call the MIND Infoline on 0300 123 3393, Monday to Friday 9am to 6pm, or, for help outside of these hours or more specialist support around suicide prevention, please contact Samaritans on 116 123, text Shout on 85258 or NHS services on 111.
