A song of hope

It’s 20 March 2020 at 8.15am. Europe is realising the seriousness of its predicament. People are dying. People are seriously ill. Everything is shutting down.

Hundreds of radio stations across the continent joined together with one song. A whole continent singing words of hope, united as we all separated into our lockdown homes.

For me it was the first of many emotional moments over the months that followed.

A simple song of just 14 lines, written for a musical (Carousel), sung by Elvis and Gerry and the Pacemakers, brought out as a charity hit after the Bradford City Fire, and again by 100 year old Sir Tom Moore.

A song immortalised by football clubs has this year, more so than ever, given us hope, and unity in crisis.

And this week once, it gave the people of Merseyside joy once more.

What other song could do that?

Thank you, Rodgers and Hammerstein for writing that song.

So hold your head up high as you walk through a storm with hope in your heart and You’ll Never Walk Alone.
