Remember Remember the Fifth of November - but maybe not this year

Today is Guy Fawkes Night, Bonfire night. Traditionally a day of public displays, and celebration, commemorating an attempted terrorist attack on Parliament and on King James I, 415 years ago.

Usually it is an evening of fun for those involved, fear for those who hate it, and overload for the fire service and the NHS.

But this year is different. England and Wales are in national lockdown due to COVID-19. Public displays are cancelled. Less shops are open to sell fireworks.

Holding a firework display in your garden as a household or bubble is allowed, but is it worth the risk? Our NHS hospitals are already struggling severely, the North West Ambulance Service was severely overloaded just a few nights ago.

Fireworks are dangerous. It is much safer not to bother this year.

Remember there are laws about what fireworks the public can buy, and when and where they can set them off.
