Tips to avoid arson

Arson can happen at any time of year. But as we approach the time where we commemorate the most famous arson attempt in history, the bombing of Parliament by Guy Fawkes, the following checklist will help you to reduce your chances of suffering an arson attack at your workplace:

1. Limit the number of entrances in use without locking or blocking fire exits.

2. Keep a watch on what's going on. Use security guards or train staff to be more vigilant.

3. If you are based in an industrial or retail park, talk to the security manager of the whole site and see how they can help.

4. Improve site security at night and report any signs that it is not.

5. Ensure all doors and windows are in good condition and lockable.

6. Keep all door gaps as narrow as possible to stop lighted fuel being pushed under them.

7. Fit a metal container to the inside of letter boxes to contain any fires from items pushed through it.

8. Keep a list of key holders and chase up missing keys.

9. Identify entry routes for intruders. Identify what can be done to to prevent access.

10. Make a rule that access to storage and warehousing is only available to authorised members of staff.

11. Maintain perimeter fencing.

12. Leave some lights on overnight.

13. Packaging, waste or rubbish must not be left to accumulate anywhere.Make sure you do not allow waste materials to build up inside of your property. Rubbish should be moved regularly to a safe storage place such as metal bins with closed lids or in locked compartments. Arrange regular collections of refuse and waste.
