A sad and tragic day

As a health and safety professional, we want to do everything we can to teach, educate, inform and prevent accidents, incidents injury and ill-health. This year has been a difficult one, with the pandemic.

And then, as if to rub salt in the wounds, today happened.

On top of the UK coronavirus death toll hitting 60,000, today an explosion at a waste water recycling centre in Avonmouth, near Bristol has left four workers dead, four families without their loved ones, and a community in shock.

And then this evening, a 700 year old church has been destroyed by fire in Derbyshire.

Thankfully days like today are few and far between. They are reminders that our work still has a lot to do, it gives us determination to meet the eventual goal that everyone who goes to work, goes home at the end of their shift in the same condition.

For four people that didn’t happen today.

My thoughts and prayers are with those who lost their lives, their families, friends and colleagues.

Thoughts too with the community of Mackworth this evening.
